edit:

Much has changed since August 2016. The project has progressed significantly (Version 4 at the time I'm editing this). This post is sort of the kick off to what's been a very exciting experience.

If you were linked here from Sudomod then I welcome you to the site. Have a look around, get involved if you want. Swing by the Discord channel to chat. Have a look at the Github to get some coding ideas.

original:

I'm creating this post for any discussion related to the PCB I'm designing for PSPi Version 3. I encourage everyone to get involved. Feel free to make requests and give advice.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you even if it's just to say you want one.

Glad to see this post man! I know jack about PCB design but Wermy over at SudoMod has a similar forum for his projects. Over there a hand full of users came and made various different PCB for the Gameboy Zero project he did. I am sure a few of them might be happy to hop on board...

Let me know if you need a sounding board, I like to think that I have good ideas. Can't wait to see what sort of awesomeness you come up with.

Maybe not for this particular project but something very very similar would be adding Trigger buttons and 2 more buttons next the A, B, X, Y if you added 2 more you could do A,B, C-up, C-Down, C-left, C-right for N64.

That would need to be in a custom shell though I am sure.

I'm planning on making a build as well. Still waiting on the screen though.
This would definitely be a cleaner solution than cutting up the FPC cables.

On the SudoMod forum John is referencing, there is a project by Kite.
An All-In-One board that contains power, audio, video, buttons,..
The ribbon cable coming from the screen is connected to his board.
Much more compact and eliminating the need for a display driver board.

I've never designed boards but I could see the benefits of one.
Connectors for the ribbon cables for the screen/buttons..
Some additional hardware like the circuits..

If not an all-in-one board, the one above seems like a good first step.
Would definitely be in the market for one.

I found what you're referring to.

That's beautiful.

I mentioned you work on their forums here  http://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=13728

Kite seems to be interested in at least giving input, go checkout the post there.

The first prototype just arrived. I'll be testing it over the next few days.

Will there be shipping to germany? I tested for shipping rates with one part from your shop but it doesn't give me rates for germany. I am really interrested in the all in one pcb u are testing right now 😉

Yes, shipping to Germany (and most of Europe) will be added soon.

love your mod and I won an auction on ebay to get me a psp 1000 a few days back. Hope that your testing with the new custom board goes well. How much space will you have with the new board? Maybe a pi 3 could fit?

I found a site that has the dimensions of all the pi's, if it helps.

Maybe. I don't have a Pi 3 to test fit, but based off the dimensions I can say it would be tight. If it does fit, all the connectors would have to be removed and plastics would probably have to removed from the PSP.

I like this idea but the problem with adding those buttons is that they would be useless with the Pi Zero. If I am not mistaken, it cannot handle the N64 emulation because the video output is not strong enough to emulate that console. I could be wrong but I think you would have to upgrade to a bigger Pi chip and that would negate this build due to size and space within the casing. The whole point of this build is utilizing the small compact design of the Zero chip. If I am mistaken please correct me or let me know if I am right on this. I am just starting out with all this Pi madness and look forward to whats the come. Looking for my donor PSP now so I can start the obsession.

It's true that the Pi Zero has a little trouble with N64 emulation. There is supposed to be a Pi 3 Compute Module available at some point that might solve this problem though.
