PSP & Compute stick
Hi, i'm very impressed by your work on the psp, fantastic stuff. I have been thinking of trying something similar but with a bit more power. Something along the lines of PSP, intel compute stick and 4.3" hdmi screen. Perhaps the board from a usb controller to interface the buttons. My first concern was will it all fit. I'd think that most of the ports would have to be desolderd, hdmi replaced with ribbon cable, ect. Any ideas or suggestions on this project?
Size is a valid concern, and the length looks like it would be a problem. The HDMI connector protrudes out a little far and might have to be removed.
I don't have any experience with the Intel stick, but this looks doable. Choosing an HDMI LCD controller board is going to be a little bit of a pain too. Finding one that fits is the reason I haven't switched to HDMI yet.
Okay, much research has gone into this in the last couple of days. Screen is proving the most difficult. I was trying to find something higher resolution than 480x272, very few 4.3" screens in a higher 16:9 resolution. If the compute stick was to run windows it would need to be something like 960x540 at the minimum. I've decided to run it at 480x272 with linux for more flexibility.
I hoping the "Adafruit TFP401 HDMI/DVI Decoder" will do the job for interfacing the screen with HDMI, it should work with most 40pin TTL LCDs. Pinouts seem to match.
I think the adafruit board is a good direction to go. It's small and many LCDs connect to it. I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard good things. Try Aliexpress for 4.3" LCDs. Just go with a known brand so you can check datasheets.
These projects definitely aren't easy, but they sure are fulfilling when you finally succeed making something new.
